SCIENCE MAGIC TRICK - SALT-PEPPER

SALT-PEPPER REMIXED

Can you have salt-pepper together and remove every flake of pepper, leaving only salt? This sounds very difficult challenge, but with little science you can do it easily.

YOU WILL NEED:
Shakers containing salt and pepper.
A pocket comb, preferably rubber, though a plastic comb will do.
You may also use an eraser instead of a comb.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1.  Shake out a fairly large quantity of salt. Then sprinkle pepper sparingly on the surface of the salt. You may mix the salt and pepper together with your fingertips until there is an even mixture of salt and pepper.
2.  With all in readiness for the experiment, bring out the pocket comb and set it with a static charge by stroking it rapidly through your hair or rubbing it vigorously against some cloth or an inflated balloon (if you have one).
3.  With your comb charged slowly lower it above the salt and pepper mixture, teeth side down until it's about 1 inch away.
4.  The flakes of pepper will fly up to the comb, leaving the salt without a grayish speck in its entire surface.

SCIENCE BEHIND:
The comb becomes negatively charged. The salt and pepper are both positively charged, which means they will form a natural attraction to the static from the comb. BUT because you lower the comb slowly, the force of attraction is weak and only the light pepper flakes get attracted, clearing them instantly from the salt.  If you were to bring the comb closer to the mixture, the heavier salt would eventually cling to it as well.
